What does it mean?
The natural environment is any location which would be considered a typical place for a child to go during a day, week, or month. Services are most often provided in the home, but they may also be provided in a daycare, preschool, at the park, at the grocery store, at the local library, or at other places to which you might typically take your child. However, natural environment is more than a location. Providing services in the natural environment means incorporating goals into daily activities with as little disruption as possible. What this means for parents and caregivers is easy-to-do, easy-to-remember, and easy carryover strategies that are implemented throughout a child's typical schedule. Instead of demonstrating drill-and-practice techniques that may be difficult to get your child to do, therapists will be demonstrating meal time activities, car time suggestions, and various play techniques all of which encourage and enhance communicative interactions between you and your child.
